Overview

The University of South Carolina, founded in 1801, is the flagship public university of the state, centrally located in downtown Columbia, the state capital. The Columbia campus is the system’s oldest and largest, renowned for its historic Horseshoe, vibrant research environment, and strong cultural, academic, and athletic traditions.

Today, USC Columbia is a Carnegie R1 research institution, educating more than 35,000 students and offering over 350 degree programs across undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels. It serves as both an academic powerhouse and a cultural anchor within South Carolina.

Historical Foundation

Founded as South Carolina College in 1801 to promote civic leadership and moral virtue in the new republic.

The original campus, known as The Horseshoe, was built between 1805 and 1860 and remains the spiritual and architectural heart of the university.

The college survived the Civil War, Reconstruction, and desegregation, expanding throughout the 20th century into a comprehensive research university.

It officially became the University of South Carolina in 1906.

Campus Layout and Character
