Visual Characteristics
The garden spans approximately 2.5 hectares, featuring a diverse collection of tropical and subtropical plant species. Pathways are paved with stone and gravel, leading through various themed sections. Plant beds are clearly labeled with scientific and common names. Notable features include a large pond with aquatic flora, a collection of mature palm trees, and several large Ficus species with extensive aerial root systems. The overall aesthetic is one of dense, cultivated greenery.
Location & Access Logistics
The Tenerife Jardín Botánico is situated in Puerto de la Cruz, approximately 1.5km southeast of the city center. Access is primarily via Calle Retama, 2. Limited street parking is available on surrounding roads, and a small paid parking lot is located nearby. Public transport includes TITSA bus lines 345 and 348, with a designated stop directly outside the main entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of the garden commenced in 1788 under the order of King Charles III of Spain. Its original purpose was to acclimatize plant species brought from overseas territories, particularly the Americas, before their transfer to royal gardens on the Spanish mainland. The initial design and supervision were attributed to Alonso de Nava y Grimón, Marquis of Villanueva del Prado.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can observe over 4,000 plant species, including a significant collection of palms, bromeliads, aroids, and various exotic trees. Self-guided walks are facilitated by informational plaques detailing plant origins and characteristics. Photography is permitted throughout the garden. Specific sections highlight medicinal plants and endemic Canary Island flora.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available near the main entrance. Limited shaded areas are provided by the dense tree canopy. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong across the site. A small gift shop is located on-site, and a café is situated adjacent to the entrance area, offering refreshments.
Best Time to Visit
The garden is accessible year-round. Mornings, particularly between 9:00 and 11:00, offer cooler temperatures and softer light, ideal for photography. The months of April to June typically provide the most abundant flowering displays across various plant species.
Facts & Legends
One of the garden's oldest and most prominent inhabitants is a massive fig tree (Ficus macrophylla) with extensive aerial roots, planted in 1860. A historical anecdote suggests that many of the exotic plants intended for mainland Spain thrived so well in Tenerife's climate that they were never relocated, contributing to the garden's permanent collection.
