Treasure Cay Beach, Abaco Islands, Bahamas, North America

Treasure Cay Beach is a 5.6 km (3.5 mile) stretch of coastline located on Great Abaco Island in the Abaco Islands, Bahamas.

Visual Characteristics

The beach features fine, white carbonate sand with a grain size averaging 0.5 mm. The water exhibits a gradient of colors, transitioning from pale turquoise near the shore to a deeper cerulean further out. The shoreline is generally flat with a gradual slope into the sea. Vegetation behind the beach consists primarily of low-lying scrub and coconut palms.

Location & Access Logistics

Treasure Cay Beach is situated on the eastern side of Great Abaco Island. Access is via Treasure Cay Road, which connects to the Queen's Highway. The nearest major settlement is Marsh Harbour, approximately 30 km (18.6 miles) to the southwest. Parking is available in designated lots adjacent to the beach access points. Public transportation options are limited; taxi services are available from Marsh Harbour, and rental cars are recommended for independent travel.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The beach is a natural accumulation of calcium carbonate sediment derived from the erosion of coral reefs and shells over millennia. It forms part of the Bahamian carbonate platform, a geologically stable area characterized by extensive shallow marine environments.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is possible in the calm waters. Kayaking and paddleboarding are permitted. Fishing charters can be arranged from nearby marinas. Walking the length of the beach is a common activity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are located at the main public access point. Shade is provided by natural vegetation and some strategically placed umbrellas at commercial areas. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Food and beverage vendors operate seasonally near the central beach access.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning (07:00-09:00) and late afternoon (16:00-18:00) offer optimal lighting conditions. The driest months are typically December through April, with average temperatures ranging from 21°C to 27°C (70°F to 80°F). High tide is not a significant factor for beach access or swimming.

Facts & Legends

The sand at Treasure Cay Beach is composed of approximately 90% aragonite, a form of calcium carbonate, giving it its exceptionally white appearance and fine texture.
