Alyosha Monument, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Europe
The Monument of the Red Army "Alyosha" is a 10.5-meter reinforced concrete statue of a Soviet soldier situated atop Bunardzhik Hill (the Hill of the Liberators) in Plovdiv.
Visual Characteristics
The monument features a soldier standing atop a 6-meter granite pedestal, facing east. The figure holds a Shpagin submachine gun pointed toward the ground. The pedestal is decorated with bas-reliefs. The entire structure is visible from almost any point in the city. The surrounding area consists of a wide paved platform with panoramic viewpoints.
Location & Access Logistics
The monument is located on the second-highest hill in Plovdiv. Access is primarily via a network of winding paved paths and stone stairs through Bunardzhik Park. The ascent from the base of the hill (near Ruski Boulevard) takes approximately 20–30 minutes on foot. There is no public vehicle access to the summit. The nearest bus stops are on Ruski Boulevard and Gladston Street.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Inaugurated in 1957, the monument was designed by a team led by sculptor Vasil Radoslavov. It was modeled after Aleksey Skurlatov, a Soviet soldier who served in Plovdiv. The hill itself is a protected natural site, characterized by its syenite rock formations and diverse bird species. It has served as a park since the early 20th century.
Key Highlights & Activities
Panoramic Viewpoint: Offers a 360-degree view of Plovdiv, the Maritsa River, and the Balkan and Rhodope Mountains.
Photography: A primary site for sunrise and sunset photography.

Infrastructure & Amenities
The monument is an open public space with no entrance fee or restricted hours. The park paths are equipped with benches and occasional trash bins. There are no commercial facilities or restrooms at the summit; these are located at the base of the hill in the residential and commercial areas. 5G/4G cellular coverage is excellent.
Best Time to Visit
Accessible 24/7. Sunset is the most popular time due to the favorable lighting and the cooling temperature. The paths are well-shaded by trees, making the climb viable during the day, though the summit platform is fully exposed to the sun.
Facts & Legends
The monument has been the subject of multiple removal proposals since 1989, but it remains a protected landmark. A local tradition involves students and graduates visiting the site during celebrations. Logistical detail: the paths can be slippery during winter or after rain due to the granite and syenite surfaces.
