Plovdiv Roman Forum, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Europe
The Ancient Forum of Philippopolis is the largest Roman forum complex in Bulgaria, located at the southern end of the central pedestrian zone in Plovdiv, near the Central Post Office.
Visual Characteristics
The site consists of extensive stone foundations, marble columns, and paved pedestrian areas. It is divided into several sectors: the Odeon (a small theater), the Library, the Treasury, and the administrative center. The ruins are situated several meters below the modern street level, integrated into the urban fabric of Central Square.
Location & Access Logistics
The Forum occupies a large area around the Central Post Office and the Tsar Simeon Garden. It is easily accessible on foot from the Plovdiv Central Railway Station (1 km north) or the main pedestrian street. Public transit stops for nearly all major city bus lines are located at "Ploshtad Saedinenie" or along Tsar Boris III Obedinitel Boulevard. Parking is available at various "Blue Zone" lots and the "Hotel Trimontium" parking area.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Constructed in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, the Forum served as the commercial, administrative, and religious heart of Roman Philippopolis. It covered approximately 11 hectares. The complex underwent several reconstructions through the 4th century. The site was rediscovered in the 1970s during the expansion of the Central Post Office.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Odeon: A restored 350-seat theater used for ancient city council meetings and musical performances.
The Library: Ruins of one of the few discovered Roman libraries in the Balkans, showing the niches where scrolls were stored.
The Propylaea: Monumental entrance gates featuring massive Corinthian columns.
Cardo Maximus: Sections of the ancient North-South main street that once connected the Forum to the rest of the city.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The Forum is an open-air museum with multiple access points. Information plaques in Bulgarian and English describe the various sectors. 5G/4G coverage is excellent. The area is part of a larger public park and pedestrian zone, providing ample seating and proximity to shops and cafes. Accessibility ramps allow viewing from both street level and the archaeological floor.
Best Time to Visit
Accessible 24/7 as an open site, though specific sections like the Odeon may have gated hours (typically 09:00–18:00). Evening lighting provides a dramatic view of the ruins against the modern city. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking the extensive site.
Facts & Legends
The Forum was once surrounded by a portico with shops that sold luxury goods from across the Roman Empire. A logistical detail: the site is still under active archaeological study, and new sections are occasionally fenced off for excavation or restoration.
