Plovdiv Roman Stadium, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Europe
The Ancient Stadium of Philippopolis is located beneath the main pedestrian street of Plovdiv, at Dzhumaya Square. Built in the early 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, it is one of the largest Roman structures in the Balkans.
Visual Characteristics
The stadium is characterized by its white marble tiered seating (cavea). Only the northern curved section (the sphendone) is fully excavated and visible to the public, while the rest remains preserved under the city's modern buildings. It originally measured 240 meters in length and 50 meters in width.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is situated at the intersection of Knyaz Alexander I Street and Zhelezarska Street. It is entirely pedestrian-accessible. The exposed section is below street level, reached via stairs leading to a small plaza. Plovdiv’s central pedestrian zone connects the stadium directly to the Old Town and the Kapana District. The nearest parking is available at the "Kapana" public lot or along Tsar Boris III Obedinitel Boulevard.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The stadium was modeled after the stadium in Delphi and could accommodate approximately 30,000 spectators. It was used for athletic games, chariot races, and gladiatorial combat. During the Roman era, it was a central hub for the Pythian, Alexandrian, and Kendrisian games. The structure was discovered in 1923, with major restoration and urban integration projects completed in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Key Highlights & Activities

Inscriptions: Visible markings on the marble seats indicating reserved places for high-ranking officials and guilds.
Aqueduct Fragment: A preserved section of the ancient city’s water supply system is visible near the entrance.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site includes a small museum shop, a cafe with a view of the ruins, and a tourist information center. Informational plaques in multiple languages provide historical context. Public restrooms are located nearby. 5G/4G cellular coverage is excellent. The plaza area is wheelchair accessible via elevators located near the 3D cinema entrance.
Best Time to Visit
The outdoor ruins are accessible 24/7. The visitor center and 3D cinema are open daily from 09:30 to 18:00. Late afternoon provides the best light for photographing the marble tiers against the backdrop of the Dzhumaya Mosque.
Facts & Legends
The stadium's track lies approximately 4 meters below the modern street level. A logistical detail: the marble used for the construction was quarried from the nearby Rhodope Mountains.
