Bachkovo Monastery, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Europe
Bachkovo Monastery is the second largest Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria, located in the Rhodope Mountains along the right bank of the Chepelare River. It is situated 10 kilometers south of Asenovgrad and approximately 30 kilometers south of Plovdiv.
Visual Characteristics
The complex is characterized by a blend of Byzantine, Georgian, and Bulgarian architectural traditions. It features two interconnected courtyards and three churches. The exterior is defined by high stone walls and arched residential wings. The central Church of the Virgin Mary is notable for its silver-plated icon of the Virgin Eleusa (Tenderness). Extensive frescoes, including the 19th-century "Last Judgment" by Zahari Zograf, decorate the exterior and interior walls.
Location & Access Logistics
Primary access is via Route 86 (Plovdiv–Smolyan). The drive from Plovdiv takes approximately 40 minutes. Public transit is available via regular bus services from Plovdiv's "Rodopi" bus station toward Smolyan or Chepelare, stopping at the village of Bachkovo. A paved pedestrian path lined with souvenir stalls leads from the main road to the monastery gates. Paid parking is available at the base of this path.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Founded in 1083 by Prince Gregory Pakourianos, a prominent Byzantine military commander of Georgian origin. The monastery served as a major literary and cultural center. The 11th-century Ossuary, located 300 meters from the main complex, is the only original structure surviving from the monastery's founding. The site is part of the "Chervenata Stena" (Red Wall) biosphere reserve, characterized by rare flora and limestone karst formations.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Miraculous Icon: The 14th-century icon of the Virgin Mary in the main church is a primary pilgrimage object.
The Refectory: Contains a massive marble table from 1601 and detailed 17th-century frescoes depicting the history of the monastery.
The Ossuary: Viewing of unique 11th and 12th-century wall paintings (accessible by special request/guided tour).
Waterfall Hike: A marked trail leads from the monastery into the reserve, passing several small waterfalls and the "Ayazmo" (sacred spring).
Infrastructure & Amenities
The complex includes a museum displaying religious artifacts, manuscripts, and icons. Basic accommodation is provided in monastery cells. Public restrooms are located outside the main courtyard. 5G cellular signal is stable in the area. The pedestrian approach is dense with vendors selling local honey, herbs, ceramics, and traditional "sladko" (fruit preserves).
Best Time to Visit
Opening hours are 07:00 to 19:00 daily. Mid-week visits are recommended to avoid significant weekend pilgrimage crowds. The monastery's patron saint day is August 15 (Assumption of Mary), which sees the highest annual attendance. Photography is prohibited inside the churches and the museum.
Facts & Legends
According to tradition, the miraculous icon was found in a nearby cave and returned to the monastery multiple times on its own before being permanently installed. A specific logistical rule: modest dress is mandatory; visitors with exposed shoulders or knees will be denied entry or provided with wraps.
