Medicine Bow National Forest is a protected area located in southeastern Wyoming, USA, encompassing a significant portion of the Medicine Bow Mountains.
Visual Characteristics
The forest is characterized by extensive coniferous forests, primarily lodgepole pine and spruce, interspersed with aspen groves. Elevations range from approximately 8,000 feet to over 12,000 feet. The landscape features alpine meadows, granite peaks, and numerous small lakes and streams. Rock formations are predominantly granite and metamorphic.
Location & Access Logistics
Medicine Bow National Forest is situated west of Laramie, Wyoming. Access is primarily via Wyoming Highway 130 (Snowy Range Road), which is a paved scenic byway. The forest is approximately 30 miles west of Laramie. Parking is available at designated pull-offs and trailheads along Highway 130. Public transport is not available within the forest; personal vehicles are required.

Established as a National Forest in 1902, Medicine Bow National Forest was created to protect timber resources and watersheds. Best Time to Visit
The best months for visiting are July through September, when most roads and trails are clear of snow. For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer optimal lighting conditions. High tide is not applicable to this terrestrial environment.
Facts & Legends
Medicine Bow Peak, the highest point in the forest, is a popular summit hike. A local legend speaks of a Native American shaman who used a medicine bow made from a tree in this area for healing rituals.
