Visual Characteristics
The ranch encompasses approximately 10,000 acres of rolling prairie land. The primary structures include a large, red-painted barn, a visitor center, and various outbuildings. The landscape is characterized by open grasslands dotted with sagebrush and occasional cottonwood trees along the Laramie River. Bison herds are the dominant visual feature across the pastures.
Location & Access Logistics
The ranch is situated approximately 15 miles south of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Access is via Interstate 80 East to Exit 14, then south on County Road 202 (Old Cheyenne Road) for approximately 3 miles. The ranch entrance is clearly marked on the west side of the road. Ample parking is available at the visitor center. No public transport services the ranch directly.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The ranch was established in 1897 by William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) as part of his expansive ranching interests. It was later acquired by the Terry family in 1950, who transitioned it to a focus on bison ranching. The land is part of the High Plains ecosystem, supporting native grasses and providing habitat for various prairie wildlife.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include a 1.5-hour train tour through the bison herd, offering close-up viewing opportunities. Visitors can also participate in feeding the bison from the train. Horseback riding tours are available, traversing the ranch's open terrain. The visitor center offers educational exhibits on bison and ranching history.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the visitor center. Limited shaded areas are present near the visitor center and train loading platform. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. A restaurant and gift shop are located within the visitor center complex.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for bison viewing is during the spring and fall months when the animals are more active. Mid-morning tours often provide good lighting for photography. Summer months can be hot, with temperatures frequently exceeding 80°F (27°C).
Facts & Legends
The ranch is home to one of the largest privately owned bison herds in North America, numbering over 3,000 animals. A unique aspect of the ranch's operation is the use of a narrow-gauge train to transport visitors directly through the heart of the bison herd, allowing for unparalleled proximity.
