Visual Characteristics

The walkways are constructed from metal and wood, suspended between large rainforest trees. They reach heights of approximately 50 meters above the forest floor. The surrounding vegetation is dense tropical rainforest, characterized by a high diversity of tree species and epiphytes.

Location & Access Logistics

Access to Ulu Temburong National Park, and subsequently the Belalong Canopy Walk, requires a boat transfer from Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar Town, followed by a further boat journey up the Temburong River. The park entrance is approximately 45 minutes by boat from Bangar. From the park entrance, a 45-minute trek on a raised boardwalk leads to the canopy walkway base. There is no direct road access to the canopy walk. Parking is available at the park ranger station near the river entry point.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Ulu Temburong National Park was established in 1991 to protect Brunei's primary rainforest. The canopy walkway was constructed to facilitate scientific research and ecotourism, allowing observation of the rainforest ecosystem from above without disturbing the ground level. The area is classified as lowland dipterocarp forest, a globally significant biome.

Key Highlights & Activities

Walking the elevated walkways offers a perspective of the rainforest canopy. Observation of arboreal wildlife, including birds and insects, is possible. Guided treks are available from the park headquarters to the walkway. Photography of the forest structure and flora is a primary activity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the Ulu Temburong National Park headquarters. Shade is provided by the rainforest canopy itself. Cell phone signal is generally absent within the park. Food vendors are not present within the national park; visitors typically bring their own provisions or arrange meals through tour operators.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for observing wildlife is typically early morning or late afternoon. The dry season, from March to September, generally offers more favorable weather conditions for trekking and boat travel. There are no tide-dependent restrictions for accessing the walkway.

Facts & Legends

The canopy walkway was designed to minimize its impact on the forest, with its support structures carefully integrated around existing trees. A specific tip for visitors is to wear insect repellent, as mosquitoes and other biting insects are present in the humid environment.
