Construction of the Burj Al Arab began in 1994 and it opened in December 1999. It was designed by architect Tom Wright of WS Atkins. The hotel was built on a man-made island to maximize its visibility and create a unique waterfront location. The island was constructed using large rocks and sand, with the foundation piles driven deep into the seabed.
