Chesa Futura, Saint Moritz, Switzerland, Europe
Chesa Futura is a high-tech residential apartment building located on a steep slope in St. Moritz Dorf, overlooking Lake Saint Moritz. It was designed by the British architectural firm Foster + Partners (Lord Norman Foster) and completed in 2002.
Visual Characteristics
The building is defined by its aerodynamic, bubble-like form. It is a three-story timber shell raised on eight pilotis (steel stilts), which allows the natural landscape to flow underneath and provides the lower apartments with unobstructed views. The exterior is clad in 250,000 hand-cut larch shingles (shingles), which weather from a golden-brown to a silver-grey to match the surrounding alpine environment. The southern facade features large, recessed balconies with floor-to-ceiling glass.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: Via Veglia 12, 7500 St. Moritz.
Access: The building is located a 5-minute walk uphill from the St. Moritz Dorf center (near Badrutt’s Palace).
Visibility: It is best viewed from the street level below (Via Veglia) or from the lakefront for its profile against the mountain.
Restriction: Chesa Futura is a private residential property. Public access to the interior or the private grounds is prohibited. Visitors must observe the architecture from public roads.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The project was designed to merge computer-aided design with traditional Swiss craftsmanship. The use of larch wood is ecologically significant; larch is a local, renewable resource that is highly resistant to rot and extreme weather. The building's rounded shape was mathematically derived to maximize internal space while minimizing its visual impact on the skyline of St. Moritz.
Key Highlights
Architectural Significance: It is considered one of the most important examples of modern alpine architecture, often described as a "futuristic chalet" or a "spacecraft."
Sustainability: The timber structure serves as a massive carbon sink, and the insulation properties of the larch cladding are optimized for high-altitude thermal retention.
Digital Design: The complex geometry of the overlapping shingles was mapped using 3D modeling software to ensure a perfect fit over the curved surface.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The building contains ten private luxury apartments. Because it is a private residence, there are no public amenities (cafes, restrooms, or museums) within the structure. The surrounding area in St. Moritz Dorf contains all standard urban infrastructure, including 5G connectivity and public parking at the "Serletta" garage.
Best Time to Visit
Photography: Early morning provides even lighting on the wooden facade. Late afternoon in autumn is optimal for capturing the silver-grey shingles against the golden larch trees of the valley.
Winter: The building is particularly striking when the rounded roof is covered in a layer of snow, emphasizing its organic shape.
Facts
The name "Chesa Futura" is Romansh for "House of the Future." A verified architectural detail: despite its futuristic appearance, the construction techniques for the shingle cladding are identical to those used on traditional Engadine barns for centuries.
