Diavolezza, Saint Moritz, Switzerland, Europe
Diavolezza is a high-alpine viewpoint and ski area situated at 2,978 meters in the Bernina Range of the Upper Engadine. It is positioned directly across from the highest peaks of the Eastern Alps.
Visual Characteristics
The site is defined by its proximity to the Bernina Massif. From the viewing terrace, the Piz Bernina (4,048m) and Piz Palü are visible, separated by the massive Pers and Morteratsch glaciers. The terrain is characterized by sheer rock faces, permanent ice fields, and deep glacial crevasses.
Location & Access Logistics
Position: Located approximately 15 kilometers southeast of St. Moritz.
Rail: Accessible via the Bernina Express line. Disembark at the "Bernina Diavolezza" station.
Cableway: A large-capacity aerial tramway transports visitors from the base station (2,093m) to the summit (2,978m) in 10 minutes.
Vehicle: Located on the Bernina Pass road (Route 29). Large, free parking is available at the base station.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The name "Diavolezza" (She-Devil) originates from local folklore regarding a beautiful mountain fairy who led hunters to their deaths in the rocky crevices. Geologically, the area offers a cross-section of the Bernina nappe’s crystalline rock. It is a critical site for monitoring glacial retreat, as the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers meet directly below the summit station.
Key Highlights & Activities
Glacier Descent: In winter, Diavolezza features an 8km marked but ungroomed run across the Morteratsch Glacier-the longest in Switzerland.
Via Ferrata: Two protected climbing routes (Piz Trovat I and II) are accessible from the summit for experienced hikers.
Jacuzzi: The summit terrace features the highest outdoor whirlpool in Europe.
Full Moon Skiing: During winter full moons, the cableway and mountain restaurant open for night skiing on unlit, natural slopes.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The Berghaus Diavolezza provides a panoramic restaurant, a large sun terrace, and overnight accommodations ranging from dormitory-style rooms to private doubles. 5G cellular coverage is maintained. The summit station and viewing platform are wheelchair accessible via the cableway.
Best Time to Visit
Winter: November to May. It is often the first non-glacier resort in the region to open due to its high altitude.
Summer: July to September for glacier trekking and the Via Ferrata.
Timing: Arrive before 11:00 AM to ensure clarity of the Bernina peaks before clouds typically form.
Facts
A verified technical fact: The Diavolezza cableway operates a 100-person cabin, one of the largest in the region. The glacier descent takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes and terminates at the Morteratsch railway station, allowing for a return by train.
