Chorten Kora, Trashigang, Bhutan, Asia

Chorten Kora is a large Buddhist stupa located in Trashigang District, Bhutan.

This structure serves as a significant pilgrimage site for both Bhutanese and Tibetan Buddhists.

Visual Characteristics

The stupa is constructed primarily from stone and whitewashed plaster. It has a distinctive circular base with a series of tiered levels leading to a central spire. The overall height is approximately 30 meters. The architectural style is characteristic of Bhutanese stupas, with influences from Tibetan Buddhist design.

Location & Access Logistics

Chorten Kora is situated approximately 25 kilometers east of Trashigang town. Access is via the East-West Highway (A1) towards Trashigang, then turning onto the local road leading to the stupa. The final approach is a short walk from the designated parking area. Public transport options are limited; local buses may stop near the turn-off, requiring a further walk or taxi hire from Trashigang.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of Chorten Kora began in the 18th century, initiated by Lama Ngawang Tshering. It is believed to have been built to subdue a demoness and is modeled after the Boudhanath stupa in Nepal. The site is located in a valley with moderate vegetation.

Key Highlights & Activities

Circumambulation of the stupa is a primary activity for pilgrims. Visitors can observe the architectural details and the religious practices of devotees. The surrounding area offers opportunities for quiet contemplation.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic restroom facilities are available near the stupa. Shade is provided by the structure itself and nearby trees. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available in the vicinity. Food vendors are typically present during festival periods but may be absent at other times.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is in the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer. The dry season, from October to March, offers the most favorable weather conditions. The stupa is accessible year-round.

Facts & Legends

A local legend states that the stupa was built over the heart of a demoness. It is also said that if one walks around the stupa 108 times, their wishes will be granted. A unique tip for visitors is to arrive during the Losar (Bhutanese New Year) festival for a more immersive cultural experience.
