Gom Kora, Trashigang, Bhutan, Asia

Gom Kora is a Buddhist temple complex situated in Trashigang District, eastern Bhutan.

This site features a central temple structure and surrounding monastic buildings constructed with local stone and timber, painted in traditional Bhutanese architectural styles with white and ochre color schemes. The main temple is a multi-story structure, approximately 15 meters in height.

Location & Access Logistics

Gom Kora is located 24 kilometers east of Trashigang town. Access is via the East-West Highway (A1). The road is paved and suitable for all vehicle types. Parking is available on-site, with capacity for approximately 30 vehicles. Public transport options include local buses traveling between Trashigang and Wamrong, which stop at the Gom Kora junction. From the junction, it is a 1-kilometer walk to the temple complex.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The site's origin is attributed to Guru Rinpoche, who is said to have meditated here in the 8th century. The current temple structure was built in the 17th century by Tenzin Rabgye, the fourth Desi of Bhutan. It serves as a pilgrimage site and a center for Buddhist practice.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can circumambulate the main temple (kora), observe the sacred cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated, and participate in prayer ceremonies. The annual Gom Kora festival, held in the first lunar month, attracts significant numbers of devotees. Hiking trails around the complex offer views of the surrounding valley.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available near the main temple entrance. Limited shade is provided by the temple structures and surrounding trees. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Basic food stalls operated by locals are present during festival periods and on weekends, offering snacks and beverages.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for photography is in the morning between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, when sunlight illuminates the temple facades. The dry season, from October to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions. The site is accessible year-round.

Facts & Legends

Local legend states that a demon resided in the cave at Gom Kora, and Guru Rinpoche subdued it by meditating there. The large rock in front of the temple is believed to be the petrified body of the demon. Visitors often tie prayer flags to the surrounding trees.
