Delma Island (Dalma Island), Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates , Asia

Delma Island, also known as Dalma Island, is an inhabited island located in the Persian Gulf, west of Abu Dhabi city in the United Arab Emirates.

Visual Characteristics

The island exhibits a low-lying topography with sandy shores and sparse vegetation, primarily consisting of date palms and desert shrubs. The coastline is characterized by shallow, clear turquoise waters and exposed coral reefs in certain areas. Structures on the island are predominantly modern, constructed from concrete and painted in neutral tones.

Location & Access Logistics

Delma Island is situated approximately 210 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi city. Access is primarily via a ferry service operating from Jebel Dhanna, which is about a 2.5-hour drive from Abu Dhabi city center via Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Highway (E11) and then Route 10. The ferry journey takes approximately 1 hour. Limited parking is available at the Jebel Dhanna ferry terminal. There are no public bus services directly to Delma Island.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Archaeological evidence suggests human settlement on Delma Island dates back over 7,000 years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the UAE. Historically, the island was a significant center for pearl diving and fishing. Ecologically, it is a low-lying island formed from marine sediments and coral deposits.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include exploring the Delma Museum, which details the island's history and pearl diving heritage. Visitors can observe traditional fishing methods and visit the local date palm plantations. Snorkeling is possible in designated shallow areas around the island, particularly during calm sea conditions. Walking tours of the village and coastline are also feasible.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic amenities are available on Delma Island, including a small number of local shops and eateries. Restrooms are located at the ferry terminal and within the village. Shade is provided by date palm trees and some man-made structures. Mobile phone signal (4G) is generally available across the island.

Best Time to Visit

The optimal time to visit Delma Island is during the cooler months, from October to April. Daytime temperatures are more moderate, making outdoor exploration comfortable. The best time of day for photography is generally in the morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh midday sun and capture softer light on the landscape and water.

Facts & Legends

Delma Island is known as the "Island of Dreams" due to its historical significance as a hub for pearl divers who would return with their earnings, often dreaming of a better future. A unique tip for visitors is to inquire locally about the availability of fresh dates during the harvest season, typically from July to September.
