Ederbauer Waterfall, Zell am See, Austria, Europe
The Ederbauer Waterfall is a minor natural water feature located in the Thumersbach district on the eastern shore of Lake Zell. It is situated within a forested ravine on the slopes of the Mitterberg, serving as a local hiking destination away from the primary tourist centers.
Visual Characteristics
The waterfall consists of a narrow stream of water cascading over a series of moss-covered dark slate and limestone rock faces. The drop height is approximately 10 to 15 meters, depending on seasonal water volume. The surrounding terrain is densely vegetated with spruce and beech trees, creating a shaded, humid microclimate with a floor of ferns and alpine mosses.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located in the Thumersbach valley, approximately 4km east of the Zell am See town center. Access is via the Thumersbacher Landesstraße; visitors can park at the Ronachkopf/Mitterberg parking lot. From there, a marked forest trail (Path No. 11) leads approximately 1.5km uphill to the waterfall. Public transit is available via Bus Line 70 to the Thumersbach Ortsmitte stop.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The waterfall is formed by the Ederbauerbach, a mountain stream that drains the southeastern slopes of the Mitterberg. Geologically, the feature is the result of post-glacial erosion, where the stream has cut through the softer sedimentary layers of the Greywacke Zone. Historically, the stream provided water to the nearby Ederbauer farm, one of the oldest agricultural sites in the district.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is the primary activity, with the trail providing a moderate incline suitable for intermediate walkers. A small wooden bridge at the base of the falls serves as a viewing platform for photography. The site is a point of interest on the "Mitterbergweg" circular hiking route, which continues upward toward the Mitterberghaus mountain inn.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no dedicated restrooms or food vendors at the waterfall site; the nearest facilities are located in the village of Thumersbach or at the Mitterberg mountain inn further up the trail. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is intermittent due to the narrow ravine topography. Natural shade is abundant throughout the approach and at the site itself.
Best Time to Visit
The waterfall is most active during the spring snowmelt in May and June or following heavy rainfall in summer. For photography, late morning is optimal as sunlight occasionally penetrates the forest canopy to highlight the water's mist. During late autumn and winter, the flow may freeze into ice curtains, though the trail can become slippery and requires appropriate footwear.
Facts & Legends
A local historical detail is that the Ederbauerbach once powered a small sawmill for the Ederbauer estate, though no visible ruins of the machinery remain at the waterfall site today. It is considered a "quiet zone" by locals, often bypassed by tourists in favor of the more prominent Sigmund Thun Gorge or Krimml Waterfalls.
