Eternal Peace Flame, Bhairahawa, Nepal, Asia

The Eternal Peace Flame is a continuous symbolic fire located at the southern end of the Central Canal in the Lumbini Monastic Zone, Nepal. It marks the transition point between the Monastic Zone and the Sacred Garden.

Visual Characteristics

The flame is housed within a red granite structure positioned at the head of the 1.5-kilometer-long Central Canal. The fire is fueled by natural gas and burns continuously. The site is a popular photography location due to its position, which provides a direct visual axis through the canal toward the World Peace Pagoda to the north and the Maya Devi Temple to the south.

Location & Access Logistics

Location: Central Canal South, Lumbini Sanskritik 32914.

Access: The flame is situated at a major pedestrian and rickshaw junction.

Transport: It is approximately 1.2 kilometers south of the Lumbini Museum and 0.8 kilometers north of the Maya Devi Temple. Most visitors reach it by foot, bicycle, or electric rickshaw from the Lumbini Gate.

Historical and Symbolic Origin

The flame was lit on November 1, 1986, to commemorate the International Year of Peace. It was established with the support of the United Nations to represent the undying hope for global harmony and the non-violent teachings of the Buddha. The fire was brought from the United States, having been ignited by the Peace Flame in New York.

Key Highlights & Activities

Orientation Point: The flame serves as the primary meeting spot for visitors navigating the northern and southern zones of the master plan.

Canal Boat Service: The boarding point for the electric boat service that travels the length of the Central Canal is located immediately adjacent to the flame.

Symbolic Crossing: Pilgrims often stop here for short prayers or reflection before entering the Sacred Garden area.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The area surrounding the flame is paved with stone and features open seating. Because it is a central transit hub, various electric rickshaws are always available for hire here. 4G/5G cellular coverage is excellent. Due to the lack of overhead shade, the granite and stone surfaces can become extremely hot during midday.

Best Time to Visit

Daily: Sunset or early evening provides the best visual contrast for the flame.

Season: October to March for clear visibility along the canal axis.
