Forest Lagoon, Akureyri, Iceland, Europe

Forest Lagoon is a geothermal spa complex situated in the Vaðlaskógur forest, overlooking Eyjafjörður fjord, near Akureyri, Iceland. It features multiple geothermal pools and cold tubs designed for relaxation and wellness.

Visual Characteristics

The facility integrates into the natural forest environment, utilizing materials such as dark wood and local stone. The main geothermal pools are irregularly shaped, constructed with dark grey concrete and natural stone edges, which contrast with the light blue-green geothermal water. The architecture is minimalist, designed to blend with the surrounding birch and pine trees of the Vaðlaskógur forest.

Location & Access Logistics

Forest Lagoon is located approximately 3 kilometers east of Akureyri city center. Access is primarily via Iceland's Route 1 (Ring Road) to the east, followed by a short turn onto a dedicated local access road leading directly to the entrance. Ample free parking is available on-site. Public transportation options are limited; a taxi or private vehicle is recommended for travel from Akureyri.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Forest Lagoon is a man-made geothermal spa, which officially opened in 2022. It was designed by Basalt Architects, known for their work on other Icelandic geothermal facilities. Its primary purpose is to serve as a recreational and wellness destination, utilizing naturally occurring geothermal water sourced from a borewell drilled on the property.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can soak in two main geothermal pools, utilize a cold tub, and experience a sauna. A swim-up bar is available within one of the geothermal pools. The location offers panoramic views of the Eyjafjörður fjord and the city of Akureyri.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Modern changing rooms equipped with showers and private lockers are provided. Restrooms are located within the main building. Limited natural shade is available from the surrounding trees; some covered areas are present near the changing facilities. 4G and 5G cell phone signal is generally strong throughout the area. A restaurant and a swim-up bar are on-site, offering food and beverage services.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal photography, late afternoon or early evening provides softer light over the fjord. The summer months, from June to August, offer the mildest weather conditions and extended daylight hours. Visiting during winter, from November to March, presents opportunities to view the Northern Lights from the pools. No specific tide requirements affect access or experience.

Facts & Legends

A practical tip for visitors is to consider visiting during the shoulder seasons, such as April-May or September-October, to experience fewer crowds while still enjoying favorable conditions. The geothermal water source for the lagoon was discovered during road construction activities in the Vaðlaskógur area.
