Myvatn Nature Baths, Akureyri, Iceland, Europe

The Myvatn Nature Baths is a geothermal lagoon and bathing facility located in northern Iceland. It is situated approximately 105 kilometers east of Akureyri, near Lake Myvatn.

Visual Characteristics

The primary feature is a large, man-made lagoon filled with milky blue, opaque geothermal water. The color is attributed to a high concentration of silica. The lagoon's edges are irregular, designed to blend with the surrounding volcanic landscape, which consists of dark lava fields and low-lying vegetation. Steam consistently rises from the water surface. The main service building features modern, minimalist architecture, utilizing concrete and wood, integrated into the natural environment.

Location & Access Logistics

The baths are located off Route 1 (the Ring Road) in northern Iceland. From Akureyri, travel east on Route 1 for approximately 100 kilometers, then turn onto Road 848 towards Reykjahlíð. The facility is well-signposted from Road 848. A large, free parking lot is available directly on-site. Public transport options are limited; no direct public bus service connects Akureyri to the baths. Organized tour buses from Akureyri are available, but self-driving is the most common method of access.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Myvatn Nature Baths opened to the public in 2004. The facility utilizes geothermal water sourced from a borehole reaching a depth of 2,500 meters. The water is naturally heated and rich in minerals, primarily silica. The site is situated within the Lake Myvatn region, an area characterized by extensive volcanic activity, geothermal features, and unique geological formations.

Key Highlights & Activities

The primary activity is soaking in the large geothermal lagoon, where water temperatures range from 36-40°C. Two natural steam baths are available, constructed directly over geothermal vents. An on-site café provides refreshments and light meals. Observation decks offer panoramic views of the lagoon and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The main building provides comprehensive facilities, including private changing rooms, showers, and restrooms. Limited natural shade is available around the lagoon, but the main building offers ample indoor shelter. Cell phone signal, including 4G and 5G, is generally reliable throughout the facility. The Kvika Restaurant, located on-site, serves a selection of food and beverages.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, late afternoon or early evening during the summer months (June-August) provides soft, extended daylight. During winter (November-March), the baths offer a unique experience amidst snow, with potential for viewing the Northern Lights. To avoid peak crowds, visiting early in the morning or later in the evening is recommended, especially during the high season. No specific tide requirements affect access or experience.

Facts & Legends

The water in the lagoon is naturally alkaline and contains a high concentration of minerals, particularly silica, which contributes to its distinctive milky blue color and is believed to have beneficial properties for skin. A practical tip for visitors is to remove all silver jewelry before entering the water, as the mineral content can cause tarnishing.
