The current Iglesia de Santa Lucia was constructed between 1891 and 1905, replacing an earlier hermitage on the same site. The design is attributed to the architect Fernando Navarro y Navarro. Its original purpose was to serve as the main parish church for the growing community of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, dedicated to Saint Lucy.
