Jazz Beach, Budva, Montenegro, Europe
Jazz Beach (Plaža Jaz) is one of the three largest beaches on the Montenegrin coast, situated in a sprawling coastal field approximately 2.5 km west of Budva. It is recognized as a protected natural heritage site of the third category.
Visual Characteristics
The beach is roughly 1.2 km long and is divided into two parts: a larger section (approx. 850m) and a smaller section (approx. 350m) formerly used by nudists. The terrain consists of small pebbles and shingle near the water, transitioning into fine sand as you move deeper into the sea. It is flanked by the steep slopes of the Spas and Goljanin hills, providing a dramatic natural amphitheater setting.
Location & Access Logistics
The beach is located along the Adriatic Highway toward Tivat/Kotor.
Access: Primarily by car, taxi, or seasonal shuttle bus from Budva.
Parking: Features a massive open-air parking area. Fees are typically charged during the summer season (approx. 3–5 €).
Pedestrian: Not easily reachable by foot from Budva Old Town due to the steep terrain and highway traffic; a boat taxi from Budva Marina is a viable alternative.
Historical & Cultural Origin
Jazz Beach gained international fame as a major concert venue. It hosted the "Live Music Festival" in 2007, featuring The Rolling Stones, and subsequent performances by Madonna and Lenny Kravitz. It also served as the long-term venue for the Sea Dance Festival. Geologically, the area is a flat karst field that terminates at the sea, unusual for the otherwise rugged Montenegrin coastline.
Key Highlights & Activities
Water Sports: Extensive facilities for jet skiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
Camping: One of the few locations near Budva with a dedicated autocamp and trailer park area situated in the shade of poplar and olive trees.
Swimming: The western end of the beach is known for calmer, shallower water, making it a preferred spot for families.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The beach is highly developed with a wide range of services:
Dining: Numerous beachfront restaurants and grills serving Mediterranean and international cuisine.
Rentals: Large sections are occupied by sunbed and umbrella operators, though a significant portion of the beach remains "free zone" for visitors with their own equipment.
Connectivity: 4G and 5G cellular coverage is reliable despite the surrounding hills.
Best Time to Visit
Due to its western orientation, Jaz receives sunlight longer than the urban Budva beaches. It is an ideal location for watching the sunset. During July and August, the beach can become very crowded; visiting in June or September offers a significantly quieter experience while the water remains warm.
Facts & Legends
The name "Jaz" is believed to derive from a local word for a place where water collects or a gap in the rocks. It is frequently cited by international travel publications as one of the best beaches in Europe due to the cleanliness of the water and the surrounding mountain scenery.
