Visual Characteristics
Constructed primarily from sandstone and granite, the capitol building features a prominent central dome topped with a lantern. The exterior exhibits Renaissance Revival architectural elements, characterized by its symmetrical facade, arched windows, and decorative cornices. The main structure stands three stories high, with a total height of 146 feet to the tip of the dome's flagpole. The dome itself is copper-clad, displaying a verdigris patina.

The Wyoming State Capitol is situated at 200 West 24th Street in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It is located in the central business district, approximately 0.5 miles west of the Cheyenne Depot Museum. Ample street parking is available in the surrounding blocks, and a public parking garage is located two blocks south on Capitol Avenue. Public bus routes 1 and 3 stop within a block of the building on Capitol Avenue.

Construction of the Wyoming State Capitol began in 1887 and was completed in 1890, designed by architect David W. Gibbs. It was built to serve as the seat of the Wyoming territorial government, and later the state government upon Wyoming's admission to the Union. The building was expanded with a west wing completed in 1917.

Visitors can tour the legislative chambers, the governor's office, and the historic rotunda. Guided tours are available on weekdays at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 1:00 PM. Self-guided tours are permitted during regular business hours. Photography is allowed within public areas.

A unique feature of the capitol is the "Cowboy Seal" located in the rotunda floor, a replica of the official seal of Wyoming which prominently features a cowboy on horseback. The original seal was designed to symbolize the state's ranching heritage.
