Schlitz Audubon Nature Center | Milwaukee

Schlitz Audubon Nature Center is a 185-acre environmental education preserve located in Bayside, Wisconsin, approximately 15 minutes north of downtown Milwaukee. Situated along the shores of Lake Michigan, the center features a rich variety of natural habitats including forests, wetlands, prairies, ravines, and bluffs. It is widely recognized for its dedication to conservation, sustainability, and environmental education.

Trails and Natural Features

The nature center offers over six miles of trails winding through diverse ecosystems, providing visitors with immersive opportunities to observe local flora and fauna. A 60-foot observation tower offers panoramic views of the preserve and Lake Michigan, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching and photography. The accessible Mystery Lake boardwalk allows visitors to observe wildlife such as frogs, turtles, and waterfowl in their natural habitat. At the north end of the Lake Terrace Trail, the Milner Lake Michigan Viewing Deck provides serene views ideal for spotting waterbirds and enjoying quiet reflection.

Visitor Center and Facilities

The Dorothy K. Vallier Environmental Learning Center, completed in 2003, serves as the heart of Schlitz Audubon. This Gold LEED-certified building showcases sustainable design features including geothermal heating and cooling, passive solar elements, and rooftop solar panels supplying part of its energy needs. Inside, visitors can find classrooms, live-animal exhibits, an art gallery hosting rotating exhibits of nature-inspired work by local artists, and a veranda overlooking Lake Michigan.

The nature store offers educational materials, local artwork, and merchandise, as well as snacks in partnership with a local co-op.

Wildlife and Education

The center is designated as an Important Bird Area, with over 266 bird species documented on site, including 36 species of warblers. The variety of habitats supports a broad range of wildlife, making it a prime location for birdwatching year-round.

Live animal exhibits feature reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates that serve as educational ambassadors. Schlitz Audubon also operates a Nature School that annually provides hands-on environmental education programs to over 35,000 children, encouraging early connection with the natural world.

Events and Programs

The center hosts seasonal programs such as bird meet-and-greets, guided hikes, nature ambassador activities, and art classes. Its facilities are available for venue rentals, including weddings, corporate events, and private gatherings. Spaces like the Great Hall, Outdoor Pavilion, and auditorium provide versatile options for different occasions.

Visitor Information

The center is located at 1111 E. Brown Deer Road, Bayside, Wisconsin 53217. Trails are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Admission fees are $10 for adults, $7 for youth ages 3 to 17 and military personnel, and free for children under 2. Members receive free admission.

The center prohibits pets, drones, and bicycles on trails but welcomes service animals. Free snowshoe rentals are available for members during winter.
