Stiniva Bay, Hvar, Croatia, Europe
Stiniva Bay is a secluded limestone cove located on the northern coast of Hvar Island, situated below the village of Brusje. While the more famous Stiniva Bay is located on Vis Island, Hvar's Stiniva is a distinct, quieter destination characterized by its pebble beach and turquoise waters.
Visual Characteristics
The bay features a small pebble beach composed of light-colored limestone stones. It is enclosed by steep, rocky cliffs partially covered in Mediterranean vegetation and pine trees. The water is highly transparent with a seabed that transitions from shallow pebbles near the shore to deeper rocky sections.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is approximately 6km east of Hvar Town. It is accessible by car via the road leading to the village of Brusje (D116 and local roads). The final descent to the water involves a steep, narrow, and rocky trail that requires approximately 10–15 minutes of hiking. Alternatively, the bay is frequently accessed via boat or water taxi from Hvar harbor.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The bay is part of the "Bruške vale" system of coves on Hvar’s northern shore. Geologically, it consists of karst limestone formations typical of the Dalmatian coast, shaped by centuries of sea erosion. It historically served as a quiet fishing and transit point for the residents of the inland village of Brusje.
Key Highlights & Activities
Snorkeling is a primary activity due to the high water clarity and rocky perimeter. The bay features a small pier used for mooring small boats and jumping into the sea. Hiking the trail from Brusje offers panoramic views of the Brač Channel.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Infrastructure is minimal. There are no public restrooms or commercial food vendors directly on the beach. Limited natural shade is provided by pine trees on the eastern side. Mobile signal (4G/5G) is generally available but can be intermittent near the cliff bases. Visitors must carry their own water and supplies.
Best Time to Visit
The optimal time for photography is early to mid-morning when the northern sun illuminates the turquoise seabed directly. The summer months of June through September offer the best swimming temperatures. Due to its location on the northern side of the island, the bay is protected from the southern Jugo wind but exposed to the Bura.
Facts & Legends
While Hvar has several coves named Stiniva (including Mala Stiniva and Vela Stiniva further east), this specific bay near Brusje is often confused by tourists with the award-winning Stiniva Beach on Vis Island. Local residents utilize the surrounding slopes for the small-scale cultivation of lavender and rosemary.
