Tamshing Monastery, Bumthang, Bhutan, Asia

Tamshing Monastery is a Buddhist monastery located in Bumthang, Bhutan.

It is recognized as one of the oldest and most important Nyingmapa monasteries in Bhutan.

Visual Characteristics

The monastery complex consists of a main temple building constructed from stone and mud. The exterior walls are whitewashed, with traditional Bhutanese architectural elements including painted motifs and carved wooden window frames. The main temple features a multi-story structure with a pitched roof. Inside, the walls are covered with ancient murals depicting Buddhist deities and narratives, some dating back to the 17th century. The primary colors in the artwork are earth tones, blues, and reds.

Location & Access Logistics

Tamshing Monastery is situated approximately 2 kilometers south of Jakar town, the administrative center of Bumthang district. Access is via the paved Bumthang Valley road. From Jakar, travel south for approximately 1.5 kilometers. The monastery is visible from the road. Parking is available on-site in a designated gravel area. Public transport options are limited; local taxis are the most practical means of reaching the monastery from Jakar.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The monastery was founded in 1501 by Pema Lingpa, a Bhutanese Buddhist master and treasure discoverer. It was built as a center for the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism. The original purpose was to preserve and propagate the teachings of Pema Lingpa and to serve as a monastic residence and place of worship. The site is situated in a valley environment, characterized by agricultural land and surrounding hills.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe the ancient murals within the main temple. The monastery offers opportunities to witness monastic life. Photography inside the main temple is generally restricted. Guided tours are not regularly scheduled but can sometimes be arranged through local guides in Jakar.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic restroom facilities are available near the monastery entrance. There is limited natural shade around the immediate temple structure. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available in the area. No food vendors are located directly at the monastery; options are available in Jakar town.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography of the exterior architecture is late morning or mid-afternoon when sunlight illuminates the walls. The most favorable months for visiting Bhutan, including Bumthang, are March to May and September to November, offering clear skies and moderate temperatures. There are no tide-dependent activities at this inland location.

Facts & Legends

A notable feature is the "chain mail" worn by Pema Lingpa, which is displayed within the monastery. Legend states that Pema Lingpa, to prove his spiritual attainment, swam through a river with a large boulder and emerged with this chain mail, which he then offered to the monastery. Visitors can touch this artifact for blessings.
