Termas de Puritama, Arica, Chile, South America

Termas de Puritama is a series of natural hot springs located in the Atacama Desert, approximately 30 kilometers north of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.

Visual Characteristics

The hot springs consist of approximately eight pools of varying sizes, carved into the desert landscape. The water is a clear, pale blue to turquoise color. The pools are surrounded by rocky, arid terrain with sparse desert vegetation, primarily low-lying shrubs and cacti. The rock formations are primarily sedimentary and volcanic in origin, with a rough, textured surface.

Location & Access Logistics

Termas de Puritama is situated 30 kilometers north of San Pedro de Atacama. Access is via the R-21 road, then turning onto a gravel track. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes by vehicle. Parking is available on-site. Public transport options are limited; private transfers or guided tours from San Pedro de Atacama are the primary methods of access.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The hot springs are a result of geothermal activity in the region, with water heated by underground volcanic processes and emerging through fissures in the rock. The area is classified as a high-altitude desert ecosystem. The pools have been utilized by local communities for centuries for their therapeutic properties.

Key Highlights & Activities

Bathing in the natural hot spring pools is the primary activity. Visitors can move between the different pools, which maintain temperatures ranging from 28°C to 33°C. Walking paths connect the pools, allowing for exploration of the immediate surroundings.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available on-site. Limited shade structures are present near the main entrance and some pool areas. Cell phone signal is generally unreliable within the canyon. There are no food vendors directly at the hot springs; visitors are advised to bring their own provisions.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is generally mid-morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh overhead sunlight. The driest months, from March to December, offer the most stable weather conditions. No specific tide requirements apply.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests that the waters of Termas de Puritama possess healing properties, particularly for ailments of the skin and joints. An interesting logistical fact is that the water temperature can fluctuate slightly based on recent rainfall and the intensity of geothermal activity.
