Velika Plaža (Long Beach), Ulcinj, Montenegro, Europe
Velika Plaža (Long Beach) is a 13-kilometer-long sandy coastline stretching from the Port Milena channel in Ulcinj to the Bojana River delta at the Albanian border. It is the longest beach on the Adriatic Sea and a primary center for water sports and ecological tourism in the Balkans.
Visual Characteristics
The beach is characterized by exceptionally fine, dark volcanic sand with high mineral content. The shoreline is extremely wide, often exceeding 60 meters, and transitions into a shallow sea floor that stays less than 2 meters deep for up to 50 meters from the coast. The hinterland consists of a protected belt of pine forests, salt marshes, and alluvial wetlands.
Location & Access Logistics
The beach begins 4 kilometers southeast of Ulcinj city center. It is accessible via the main regional road (R-17) toward the Bojana River. Over 30 individual beach clubs and "kopas" (managed sections) are accessed by dedicated gravel turn-offs from the main road. Public transport consists of seasonal shuttle buses from Ulcinj. Free parking is available at almost every beach entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The beach was formed by the deposition of fine sediment from the Bojana River over several millennia. Geologically, the sand is rich in over 20 minerals, including iodine, which gives it a darker hue compared to other Mediterranean beaches. Large sections of the dunes and the hinterland are under environmental protection to preserve the unique psammophilous (sand-loving) plant species.
Key Highlights & Activities
Kitesurfing and Windsurfing: Due to the consistent "Maestral" thermal wind, the southern section near Ada Bojana is a premier European hub for kitesurfing.
Sand Therapy: The mineral-rich sand is traditionally used by locals and tourists for "sand bathing" to treat rheumatic and muscular conditions.
Beach Clubs: The coast is divided into named sections (e.g., Copacabana, MCM Beach, Safari Beach) offering varied amenities from luxury sunbeds to eco-friendly camping.
Horseback Riding: Several stables offer sunset rides along the shoreline due to the flat, expansive terrain.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Infrastructure varies by section; major beach clubs provide restaurants, changing rooms, showers, and public restrooms. 5G cellular coverage is excellent along the entire 13km stretch. Natural shade is non-existent on the beach itself but abundant in the pine forest belt 100 meters inland.
Best Time to Visit
The beach is most active from June to September. Photography is optimal during the "golden hour" before sunset, as the western orientation allows for unobstructed views of the sun dipping into the Adriatic. For kitesurfing, the best winds typically occur between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
Facts & Legends
A common local fact is that the sand is so fine and mineral-heavy that it possesses mild radioactive properties believed to be beneficial for health. The beach is also noted for its sheer scale; even during the peak of August, the central sections remain largely uncrowded due to the massive surface area.
