Molundu Falls is a waterfall located in the Southwest Region of Cameroon, near the city of Buea.
Visual Characteristics
The falls descend approximately 30 meters over a series of dark, volcanic rock formations. The water is clear and plunges into a shallow pool at the base. Surrounding vegetation is dense rainforest, characterized by large ferns and broadleaf trees.
Location & Access Logistics
Molundu Falls is situated approximately 15 kilometers northwest of Buea. Access is via the Muea-Kumba road (R1). Turn off the main road onto a dirt track approximately 2 kilometers past Muea. This track is approximately 3 kilometers long and requires a 4x4 vehicle during the wet season. Parking is available at the end of the track, with a short walking path to the falls.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The falls are a result of erosion acting upon the volcanic rock of the Mount Cameroon massif. The area is part of the Mount Cameroon National Park, a protected ecosystem known for its high biodiversity.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of the waterfall. Swimming is possible in the pool at the base during dry periods. Hiking on trails within the surrounding rainforest is permitted.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no formal facilities at Molundu Falls. Restrooms are not available. Shade is provided by the dense forest canopy. Cell phone signal is intermittent.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is mid-morning when sunlight penetrates the canopy. The dry season, from November to March, offers the most accessible conditions for reaching the falls. During the wet season (April to October), the volume of water is higher, but the access track can become impassable.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests the pool at the base of the falls has healing properties. Geologically, the volcanic rock formations are relatively young, estimated to be a few thousand years old.
