The castle was commissioned by George C. Boldt, a wealthy hotelier who owned the famous Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Boldt envisioned a six-story, 120-room “castle” featuring elaborate architecture and luxurious interiors, drawing inspiration from European castles and chateaux.

In 1977, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority took over the property with a mission to restore and preserve the castle. While the interior is still not fully completed as originally planned, many rooms have been restored and furnished to reflect the period’s style.
