Furi Glacier, Zermatt, Switzerland, Europe
Furi is a mountain hamlet and transit hub situated at 1,867 meters on a plateau south of Zermatt, Switzerland. While the Gorner and Theodul glaciers terminate further up the valley, Furi serves as the primary access point to the glacier-carved landscape of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.
Visual Characteristics
The area is characterized by a transition from subalpine larch forests to glaciated rocky terrain. To the south, the landscape is defined by the Gorner Gorge, where glacial meltwater has carved deep vertical channels into the serpentine rock. The terrain features large erratic boulders and "Gletschergarten" (glacier garden) formations, including giant kettles and polished rock surfaces left behind by the receding Gorner Glacier.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via the Zermatt-Furi gondola, which departs from the southern end of Zermatt village. The transit time is approximately 5 minutes. Furi is also accessible by a 45-minute uphill hike from Zermatt following the "Gletschergarten" or "Matterhorn" trails. As Zermatt is car-free, all visitors must arrive via the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn at the Zermatt main station before proceeding to the gondola.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Furi was historically a summer settlement for Zermatt’s agricultural community. The surrounding landscape was shaped by the "Little Ice Age" expansion of the Gorner Glacier, which reached its maximum extent in the mid-19th century before retreating to its current position higher up the mountain. The local ecology is dominated by the Arvenwald (stone pine forest) and high-altitude wetland plants that thrive in the glacial silt.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Glacier Garden (Dossen) features "potholes" carved by glacial meltwater during the last ice age. A 100-meter-long suspension bridge hangs 90 meters above the Gornervispe river, providing views into the Gorner Gorge. In winter, Furi is a central junction for skiers returning from the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Schwarzsee sectors.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Furi contains several mountain restaurants with outdoor terraces and public restrooms. The site is equipped with 5G cellular coverage. A playground and barbecue area are located near the Glacier Garden. There is no natural shade in the open meadows, but the surrounding forests provide cover. The gondola station is wheelchair accessible via elevators.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for hiking the Glacier Garden and crossing the suspension bridge is from June to October. For photography, the late afternoon light illuminates the larch forests and the Matterhorn to the west. Winter visitors should arrive mid-morning to avoid the peak afternoon congestion of skiers descending to Zermatt.
Facts & Legends
Local legends speak of "Wildmännli" (wild men) who supposedly lived in the rocky caves of the Gorner Gorge. A verified tip for visitors is the Dossen Glacier Garden, which remains one of the few places where you can observe the "polishing" effect of moving ice on bedrock without needing technical climbing equipment.
