Gornergrat Railway, Zermatt, Switzerland, Europe
The Gornergrat Railway is a mountain rack railway connecting the village of Zermatt to the Gornergrat summit in the Swiss Alps. It is the highest open-air railway in Europe, reaching an altitude of 3,089 meters.
Visual Characteristics
The railway utilizes a double-track system with a specialized rack-and-pinion mechanism for steep gradients. The rolling stock consists of modern electric railcars, typically brown or red, with panoramic windows. The track ascends through subalpine larch and stone pine forests before transitioning into a high-alpine landscape of grey rock, moraines, and glaciers. The summit station is constructed of granite and stone, integrated into the rocky ridge.
Location & Access Logistics
The base station is located at Bahnhofplatz in Zermatt, situated directly opposite the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn station. The journey covers 9.3 kilometers with a vertical ascent of 1,469 meters. Trains depart every 24 minutes during peak hours. As Zermatt is car-free, passengers must arrive via train from Täsch. The total transit time from Zermatt to the summit is 33 minutes.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The railway opened on August 20, 1898, as Switzerland's first electric rack railway. It was engineered by the firm Haag & Greulich and was originally intended only for summer operation. The line passes through several ecological zones, including the protected Gornergrat-Riffelberg area, which features alpine tundra and habitat for the Alpine marmot and chamois.
Key Highlights & Activities
The summit offers a 360-degree observation deck viewing 29 peaks over 4,000 meters, including the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. Hiking trails connect the intermediate stations of Rotenboden, Riffelberg, Riffelalp, and Findelbach. In winter, the railway provides access to the "Snooc" sledding run and high-altitude ski slopes. The "Zooom the Matterhorn" multimedia exhibit is located at the summit station.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The Gornergrat summit station includes the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat, which houses a restaurant, restrooms, and a shopping center. 5G cellular signal is available along the entire track and at the summit. Indoor waiting areas are provided at all intermediate stations. There is no natural shade at the summit. Accessible facilities and elevators are available for passengers with reduced mobility.
Best Time to Visit
The highest visibility for photography occurs during early morning departures to capture the reflection of the Matterhorn in the Riffelsee. Summer months (July-August) provide access to all hiking trails, while late January to March offers the best snow conditions for winter activities. The "golden hour" before the final descent provides optimal lighting for the surrounding glaciers.
Facts & Legends
The railway utilizes a regenerative braking system that converts kinetic energy into electricity during the descent, which is then fed back into the overhead power lines. A local tip: get off at Rotenboden station and walk 10 minutes to the Riffelsee lake to capture the symmetrical reflection of the Matterhorn before the wind picks up mid-morning.
