Riffelberg Railway | Zermatt

The Riffelberg is a station and high-alpine plateau located at 2,582 meters along the Gornergrat Railway line above Zermatt, Switzerland. It serves as a major transit node connecting the railway to the Riffelberg-Express gondola and the surrounding ski and hiking infrastructure.

Hikers can reach the site from Zermatt via the "Riffelalp-Riffelberg" trail, a steep ascent of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. There is no vehicle access.

The Riffelberg Hotel, located at the station, opened in 1854 and is the oldest mountain hotel in the Zermatt region; it served as a base for early alpinists during the Golden Age of Mountaineering. The plateau sits within a high-alpine ecological zone characterized by permafrost and specialized flora such as the glacier buttercup. The landscape was geologically shaped by the movement of the Gorner Glacier, which remains visible to the south.

The best time for photography is at sunset, as the west-facing position captures the final light on the Matterhorn. Mid-winter (January–March) offers the most reliable snow for skiing. For hikers, July through September provides clear paths. Morning visits are recommended to avoid the clouds that frequently gather around the peak in the afternoon.

Facts & Legends

In 1865, the survivors of the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn stayed at the Riffelberg Hotel after their descent. A verified tip for visitors is the "Mark Twain Trail," named after the author who famously satirized an expedition to the Riffelberg in his 1880 book A Tramp Abroad.
