Holy Trinity Column, Kosice, Slovakia, Europe
The Holy Trinity Column, also known as the Plague Pillar (Immaculata), is a Baroque religious monument situated in a small park in the northern section of Hlavná ulica in Košice, Slovakia. It was erected as an expression of gratitude following the cessation of a plague epidemic that afflicted the city between 1709 and 1710.
Visual Characteristics
The monument reaches a height of 14 meters and is constructed primarily from sandstone. It consists of a triangular pedestal adorned with statues of saints (St. Joseph, St. Sebastian, and St. Ladislaus) and a towering column topped with a gilded representation of the Virgin Mary. The base features intricate relief carvings and stone balustrades, while the overall architectural style is characterized by the dynamic, emotive forms typical of High Baroque sculpture.
Location & Access Logistics
The column is located on the pedestrian axis of Hlavná ulica, approximately 0.3km north of St. Elisabeth Cathedral. Since it stands in a car-free zone, it is reached via walking; the nearest tram stop is "Radnica Starého mesta" (Lines 2, 4, 6, 9), located 0.3km to the north. Public parking is available in the multi-story garage at the Cassovar complex or the Aupark shopping center, both within a 10-minute walk.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The monument was built between 1720 and 1723 on the site of a former medieval gallows. It was designed by the architect and sculptor Šimon Griming, with stonework executed by master mason Leopold deessy. The construction was funded by city residents and the local administration to replace the site of execution with a symbol of spiritual protection and recovery.
Key Highlights & Activities
The site functions as a central landmark for walking tours of the Old Town. Visitors can observe the detailed allegorical sculptures and Latin inscriptions on the base. During the winter season, the area surrounding the column serves as a focal point for the city’s Christmas markets, featuring traditional crafts and regional food.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The monument is surrounded by a public park area with stone benches and shaded seating. There is full 5G cellular coverage available. Public restrooms are located in the underground facility directly north of the monument near the City Hall. Numerous cafes and retail shops line the street on both sides of the column.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is during the "blue hour" or evening, when the monument is illuminated by specialized floodlights that highlight the gilded details. May and June provide the most favorable weather for outdoor viewing. In winter, the site is most atmospheric after sunset when the Christmas lights are active.
Facts & Legends
Local legend suggests that the remains of some of the plague victims are buried in the foundations of the column to perpetually sanctify the site. A verified historical oddity is that during the 1950s under the communist regime, there were official proposals to relocate or dismantle the monument due to its religious nature, but it was ultimately preserved as a historical work of art.
