Košice Zoo is a zoological garden located in the Kavečany district of Košice, Slovakia. Covering an area of 288 hectares, it is the largest zoo in Central Europe by total surface area, focusing on Eurasian and African fauna.

The zoo is located at Široká 31, approximately 10 kilometers north of the Košice city center.

Public Transport: Bus line 29 operates from the main railway station and "Námestie Maratónu mieru" directly to the "ZOO" terminus.

Vehicle Access: Accessible via the road through the Kavečany district; a large asphalt parking lot is located at the entrance (fee required).

Cycling: A designated bicycle path connects the city's northern outskirts to the zoo entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the zoo began in 1979, and it was officially opened to the public in 1986. The area is geologically part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, characterized by a forest-steppe ecosystem. It was founded with a mission to breed endangered species, specifically Hucul horses and brown bears.

Visitors can walk the designated 5-kilometer loop trail or utilize the seasonal DinoPark, an exhibition of robotic dinosaur models located within the grounds. Specific activities include animal feeding demonstrations (seals and penguins), horseback riding for children, and visiting the "Eagles' Canyon" walk-through enclosure.

The facility includes multiple restrooms located at the entrance and the "U vlka" refreshment station. Shade is abundant along forest paths, though the central meadows are exposed. There is reliable 4G/5G cellular signal throughout the lower valley, with some degradation in remote forested sections. Several seasonal food stalls and a sit-down restaurant provide meals during the peak season.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for animal activity is during the morning hours (09:00–11:00) or late afternoon. The zoo is open year-round, but May and June offer the best weather conditions. Photography is optimal in the afternoon when light hits the western-facing slopes of the bear and wolf enclosures.

Facts & Legends

Košice Zoo is famous for the successful birth and rearing of five bear cubs simultaneously in 2002, a feat that was recorded in the Guinness World Records. A unique tip: the zoo is one of the few in Europe that successfully breeds the Syrian brown bear in an environment closely mimicking its natural habitat.
