Orthodox Synagogue, Kosice, Slovakia, Europe
The New Orthodox Synagogue is an active place of worship and Holocaust memorial located on Puškinova Street in Košice, Slovakia. Completed in 1927, it replaced the older synagogue on Zvonárska Street as the primary representative site for the city's Orthodox community.
Visual Characteristics
The building features a Neo-Classical exterior combined with traditional East Slovak Renaissance motifs, such as a distinctive attic storey. Its eastern facade on the street features a grand staircase and a triple-arched monumental protrusion, which serves as a decorative "mock entrance." The interior is a modernist central hall topped by a large dome, with a women’s gallery running along three sides. The sanctuary is anchored by a central bimah and a Torah ark crafted from red marble.
Location & Access Logistics
The synagogue is located at Puškinova 1 (also cited as Puškinova 17), approximately 0.2km east of the main pedestrian zone (Hlavná ulica).
Entrance: The functional main entrance is located on the western side of the building, away from the street.
Public Transport: Accessible via tram (Lines 2, 3, 6) to the "Staničné námestie" hub or the "Námestie osloboditeľov" stop, both within a 5-minute walk.
Walking: It is positioned 0.5km west of the central railway station.
Historical & Architectural Origin
Architects: Designed by Ľudovít Oelschläger (a Christian architect) and Gejza Zoltán Boskó.
Design: The architecture is a notable example of regional moderate modernism and cubist-influenced conception.
Materials: The interior structure is largely constructed of reinforced concrete, a modern choice for the 1920s.
Key Highlights & Activities
Holocaust Memorial: A bronze memorial plaque on the facade commemorates the 12,000 Košice Jews deported to concentration camps in 1944.
Cultural Center: The Ľudovít Feld Cultural Center operates from the premises, featuring an art gallery dedicated to the Košice-born artist Ľudovít Feld and other regional artists.
Judaica Exhibition: A small exhibition of Jewish artifacts is available for visitors.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Seasonal Use: The synagogue is not typically used for worship during winter months because the main hall lacks a heating system.
Connectivity: Reliable 5G/4G cellular coverage in the surrounding area.
Facilities: The complex historically included a school and a Talmud Torah school, though the school building is no longer owned by the community.
Best Time to Visit
The synagogue is open to the public for tours and the art gallery on a limited schedule, typically Monday through Sunday between 14:00 and 17:00.
Facts & Legends
The synagogue was built to accommodate 800 worshippers, reflecting the size and influence of the Jewish community, which once made up over 16% of Košice's population. It is one of five extant synagogues in the city, standing as a primary witness to the region's diverse pre-war heritage.
