Mostnica Gorge, Bohinj, Slovenia, Europe
Mostnica Gorge is a 2-kilometer-long canyon carved by the Mostnica stream in the Voje Valley, located just north of the village of Stara Fužina in Bohinj. The gorge is situated within the Triglav National Park and is characterized by narrow passages and deep erosional hollows.
Visual Characteristics
The gorge features vertical limestone walls reaching heights of up to 20 meters, with the channel narrowing to as little as 1 meter in width. The water is crystalline with a distinct turquoise hue, flowing over white limestone bedrock. Key geological features include "natural pots" or circular hollows worn into the stone by pebbles, and a prominent rock formation known as "The Elephant," created by natural erosion.
Location & Access Logistics
The entrance is located at the northern edge of Stara Fužina, approximately 1.5km from the Ribčev Laz bridge at Lake Bohinj. Access is via a marked forest trail starting from the Zois Manor or the paid parking lot at Vorančkova ulica. A regional bus connects Ribčev Laz to Stara Fužina, followed by a 10-minute walk to the trailhead. Entrance fees are collected during the summer season.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The gorge was formed by the post-glacial erosion of the Mostnica stream as it cut through the limestone floor of the Voje alpine valley. Historically, the area was significant for iron ore transport; the "Devil's Bridge" (Hudičev most), built in 1777 by Baron Žiga Zois, was constructed to facilitate the transport of iron from the surrounding mountains to the smelting furnaces.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can hike a circular path that runs along both banks of the gorge, connected by several historic stone and wooden bridges. The trail continues past the gorge into the upper Voje Valley, leading to the 21-meter-high Mostnica Waterfall (Slap Mostnica). Photography of the "Elephant" rock and the deep turquoise pools is a primary activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The trailhead at Stara Fužina has a small information booth and restrooms. Along the trail, there are no facilities until reaching the mountain huts in the Voje Valley (Koča na Vojah), roughly 45 minutes from the entrance. Cell phone signal (4G) is patchy within the deeper sections of the canyon. The path is naturally shaded by dense beech and spruce forest.
Best Time to Visit
The most impressive water flow occurs during late spring (May and June) due to snowmelt. For photography, midday provides the best overhead light to illuminate the narrow canyon floor and the turquoise water. Autumn offers a high contrast between the white limestone and the changing foliage colors.
Facts & Legends
According to local legend, the Devil built the "Devil's Bridge" in exchange for the soul of the first creature to cross it; the villagers outsmarted him by sending a dog across first. A verified scientific oddity is that the water temperature rarely exceeds 8°C, even during the peak of summer, due to the stream's high-altitude alpine sources.
