Ribčev Laz Monument, Bohinj, Slovenia, Europe
The Monument to the Four Courageous Men (Spomenik štirim srčnim možem) is a bronze sculptural group located in the center of Ribčev Laz, near the eastern shore of Lake Bohinj. It commemorates the first documented ascent of Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak.
Visual Characteristics
The monument consists of four life-sized bronze figures standing on a natural limestone pedestal. The figures are depicted in 18th-century peasant attire, equipped with traditional mountain gear of the period, such as walking sticks and ropes. One figure points toward the summit of Mount Triglav. The sculpture is situated in a small landscaped park overlooking the lake and the Church of St. John the Baptist.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is positioned at the intersection of the main roads in Ribčev Laz, approximately 50 meters from the Lake Bohinj bridge. It is easily accessible via regional road 209 from Bled. The "Bohinj Jezero" bus stop is located 30 meters from the monument. Public parking is available at the central Ribčev Laz lot, a 2-minute walk away.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The monument was erected in 1978 to mark the 200th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Triglav, which took place on August 26, 1778. The four men honored are Luka Korošec, Matevž Kos, Štefan Rožič, and Lovrenc Willomitzer. This ascent is considered a foundational event in Slovenian mountaineering history and national identity.
Key Highlights & Activities
The monument is a primary meeting point for tourists and hikers starting their journey into the Julian Alps. Photography is the main activity, often framing the statues with the lake and mountains in the background. Educational plaques nearby provide historical context regarding the climbers and the significance of the ascent.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The monument is located in a high-traffic tourist zone. Public restrooms, the Tourist Information Center, and various cafes are within 100 meters. The area is fully paved and accessible to mobility-impaired visitors. 5G mobile coverage is consistent. Shade is provided by several large deciduous trees surrounding the statues.
Best Time to Visit
The monument is accessible year-round. Morning hours provide the best natural light for photographing the figures against the backdrop of the mountains. During the summer, the surrounding park is a popular spot for resting before or after lake activities.
Facts & Legends
The ascent was commissioned and financed by Baron Žiga Zois, a prominent Enlightenment figure and polymath. A specific historical detail: only two of the four men were professional hunters/miners, while the others were local inhabitants with exceptional knowledge of the terrain. The pointing gesture of the lead figure is geographically accurate, directed toward the actual summit of Triglav.
