Washington Park (Wash Park), Denver, USA Colorado, North America
Washington Park is a 165-acre urban park located in Denver, Colorado. It is situated approximately 3 miles southeast of the Denver central business district.
Visual Characteristics
The park features two large, man-made lakes: Smith Lake and Washington Park Lake. Both lakes are surrounded by grass lawns and mature deciduous trees, primarily elm and oak. The park's landscape includes paved walking paths, sports fields (baseball, soccer), tennis courts, and a botanical garden area with a greenhouse. The terrain is generally flat with some gentle undulations.
Location & Access Logistics
Washington Park is accessible via vehicle from East Mississippi Avenue to the north and South Downing Street to the west. Parking is available in designated lots around the park perimeter and along some interior park roads. Public transportation options include Denver RTD bus routes 0, 11, and 24, which stop at or near the park's entrances. The closest light rail station is Louisiana/Pearl, approximately 1.5 miles west.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Washington Park was established in 1899 and designed by landscape architect Reinhard Schuetze. Its original purpose was to provide recreational space for Denver residents. The park was developed on land that was previously undeveloped prairie. The lakes were created through excavation and are fed by the city's water system.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include jogging and cycling on the paved paths (a 2.4-mile loop around the park), swimming and sunbathing at the George L. Hosokawa Recreation Center's outdoor pool (seasonal), boating (non-motorized) on Smith Lake, and playing tennis on the park's courts. The Denver Botanic Gardens at York Street is adjacent to the park's east side, offering separate botanical exhibits.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are located at multiple points throughout the park, including near the lakes and sports fields. Shade is provided by mature trees and several covered picnic shelters. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong within the park. Food vendors are not permanently stationed within the park, but food trucks are sometimes present on weekends, and numerous restaurants are located on the surrounding streets.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM) offers softer light and fewer crowds. The best months for general park use are May through September, when temperatures are mild and outdoor amenities are fully operational. Smith Lake is open for boating from Memorial Day to Labor Day. High tide is not a relevant factor for this park.
Facts & Legends
A notable feature is the "Wash Park Grinder," a local term for the popular 2.4-mile loop around the park, often used by runners and cyclists for training. The park's greenhouse, built in 1960, houses a collection of tropical and desert plants and is open to the public during specific hours.
