Its development was driven by agriculture, particularly the cultivation of bananas and potatoes on an extensive system of terraced fields, an adaptation to the steep terrain. Ecologically, Agulo borders the Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its ancient laurel forests (laurisilva), which are a relic of Tertiary-era vegetation.
