Belavista Square, Herceg Novi, Montenegro, Europe
Belavista Square, officially known as Trg Hercega Stjepana, is a central stone-paved plaza located in the core of Herceg Novi's Old Town. It serves as the primary architectural and social hub connecting the town's upper and lower fortifications via steep stone stairways.
Visual Characteristics
The square is paved with light grey limestone and bordered by three-story stone buildings featuring green wooden shutters and red-tiled roofs. Its dominant feature is the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, an eclectic structure blending Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic styles constructed from fine-cut white stone. A central neo-Gothic stone fountain, the Karaca, is positioned on the southern edge of the plaza.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is strictly pedestrian via the "Skalinada" (stone stairs) from the main Njegoševa street or the lower 13 Jula street. The nearest vehicle drop-off point is the Old Town bus stop at the Clock Tower (Sat Kula), approximately 50 meters to the west. Public parking is available in the municipal lot near the municipal building (Opština), a 5-minute walk from the square.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The square developed during the 19th-century Austro-Hungarian administration of the city, though the surrounding street layout follows earlier Venetian and Ottoman urban patterns. The central Church of St. Michael the Archangel was completed in 1911, designed by architect Milan Karlovac on the site of previous religious structures.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observing the interior iconography of the Church of St. Michael is a primary activity. The square functions as a transition point for hikers climbing toward the Spanjola Fortress. The Karaca fountain provides potable water, and the plaza hosts open-air book fairs and cultural exhibitions during summer months.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Multiple cafes and small retail shops line the perimeter. Public restrooms are located near the Clock Tower entrance. The square has full 4G and 5G cellular coverage from national providers. Natural shade is provided by several large palm trees and the shadows of the surrounding high stone walls.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is during the "golden hour" before sunset when the sun hits the stone facades from the west. May, June, and September offer stable weather and lower pedestrian density. In July and August, the square is best visited before 10:00 AM to avoid high temperatures and peak tourist traffic.
Facts & Legends
The square's colloquial name, "Belavista," translates to "Beautiful View," a name given by Italians and Austro-Hungarians due to the vantage point it originally provided over the Bay of Kotor before modern building heights increased. A local curiosity is the Karaca fountain, which still draws water from a subterranean source that remained functional throughout the Ottoman occupation.
