Old Railway Station, Herceg Novi, Montenegro, Europe
The Old Railway Station in Herceg Novi is a historic stone building located on the waterfront at the Gradska Luka (City Harbor). It formerly served as a key stop on the narrow-gauge railway line that connected the Adriatic coast to the hinterland of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Visual Characteristics
The structure is a two-story edifice built from precision-cut grey limestone blocks, reflecting the standard architectural style of Austro-Hungarian railway stations. It features arched windows on the ground floor, a gabled roof with red clay tiles, and decorative stone cornices. The building is situated directly on the "Pet Danica" promenade, with its southern facade facing the pier.
Location & Access Logistics
The station is located at the base of the Old Town, specifically at the intersection of the Pet Danica promenade and the city harbor docks. Pedestrian access is via the promenade or the steep stairways descending from the Clock Tower area. Vehicle access is restricted to the nearby harbor parking lot, which is reached via the X Hercegovačke Brigade road.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Commissioned by the Austro-Hungarian administration, the station opened in 1901 as part of the railway line linking Sarajevo to Zelenika. The line was a narrow-gauge (760mm) technical achievement traversing difficult karst terrain. The station remained operational until 1968, when the Yugoslav government decommissioned the railway line in favor of road transport.
Key Highlights & Activities
The building currently serves a dual purpose as a cinema (Dvorana Park) and a cultural center, hosting film screenings and art exhibitions. Visitors can walk the adjacent promenade, which follows the original rail bed. The area is a primary hub for boarding tourist boats and water taxis departing for the Luštica Peninsula.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The building houses a cinema hall and administrative offices. Public restrooms are located 20 meters away at the harbor facility. Numerous restaurants and cafes occupy the immediate waterfront area. 5G cellular coverage is excellent, and limited shade is provided by the building’s western side and nearby palm trees.
Best Time to Visit
Evening hours are best for photography when the building and harbor are illuminated by sunset light from the west. The cinema typically holds screenings in the late afternoon and evening. During the summer, the area is busiest between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM when boat excursions depart.
Facts & Legends
The building was once the residence of the famous Yugoslav writer and Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić during his visits to the city, and a commemorative plaque marks his connection to Herceg Novi. The tunnel located immediately to the west of the station was originally blasted through the solid rock specifically for the steam locomotives of the early 20th century.
