Njivice Beach, Herceg Novi, Montenegro, Europe

Njivice Beach, also known as the Royal Beach, is a coastal stretch located on the western shore of the Bay of Kotor, directly across from the city of Herceg Novi. It is situated within the settlement of Njivice, approximately 4 kilometers from the Igalo border crossing with Croatia.

Visual Characteristics

The shoreline consists of a mix of fine pebbles, coarse sand, and concrete bathing platforms. The seabed drops off gradually, featuring a sandy bottom that contributes to the water's clear, light-blue hue. The backdrop is characterized by dense Mediterranean vegetation, including palm trees, cypress, and lush scrubland that reaches the edge of the beach.

Location & Access Logistics

The beach is accessible via the local road branching off the E65 Adriatic Highway. By sea, regular water taxi lines operate from the Herceg Novi harbor (Gradska Luka) and Igalo pier during the summer months. There is limited street parking within the Njivice settlement, with a dedicated lot located near the Iberostar Herceg Novi hotel.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The beach and surrounding settlement developed primarily as a resort area in the mid-20th century. Geologically, it is part of the flysch and limestone formation characteristic of the Herceg Novi bay area, where natural erosion has created small, sheltered coves.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming and sunbathing are the primary activities. The calm waters of the bay make it a frequent stop for kayakers and paddleboarders. Boat excursions frequently depart from this point toward the Luštica Peninsula and the Mamula fortress.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The beach is equipped with sunbed and umbrella rentals. Showers, changing rooms, and public restrooms are available on-site. The area is served by beach bars and restaurants located immediately on the waterfront. 4G and 5G cellular signals are stable across the entire beach area.

Best Time to Visit

The beach receives direct sunlight from early morning until late afternoon due to its eastern orientation. The best months for swimming are June through September. Photography is optimal in the morning hours when the sun illuminates the Herceg Novi Old Town across the water.

Facts & Legends

The beach earned the nickname "Royal Beach" because it was a favored swimming location for the Yugoslav royal family, specifically Queen Maria, who sought the privacy afforded by its position across the bay from the main town.
