Forte Mare Fortress (Tvrđava Forte Mare) is a medieval maritime fortification located on the southern edge of the Old Town of Herceg Novi, situated directly on the cliffs above the sea.

The fortress is built from massive grey stone blocks, integrated into the rocky shoreline. It features high perimeter walls, narrow defensive corridors, and a spacious upper terrace. Its architecture displays a layered evolution from medieval foundations to massive defensive bastions designed for artillery. The upper plateau provides wide views of the Bay of Kotor and the Luštica Peninsula.

Historical & Defensive Origin
Founded by the Bosnian King Tvrtko I Kotromanić in 1382 as part of the city's initial defense system. It was significantly expanded during the Venetian period (17th–18th century) and later reinforced by the Austro-Hungarians. Its name, Italian for "Sea Fortress," reflects its primary purpose: guarding the entrance to the Bay of Kotor against naval incursions.
