Blue Eye Spring, Sarande, Albania, Europe
The Blue Eye, known locally as Syri i Kaltër, is a water spring and natural phenomenon situated near the village of Muzinë in the Vlorë County of southern Albania. It is located approximately 22 km east of the city of Sarandë.
Visual Characteristics
The spring features a deep circular pool where water rises from a depth of more than 50 meters, creating a dark blue center surrounded by shallower, bright turquoise edges. The water is exceptionally clear, allowing for the visibility of limestone rocks and vegetation deep within the vent. The surrounding area is characterized by a dense forest of oak and plane trees, with vibrant green aquatic plants growing along the riverbanks of the Bistricë River.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is accessed via the SH99 highway that connects Sarandë to Gjirokastër. From the main road, a paved side road leads to a designated parking area. Visitors must walk approximately 1.2 km from the parking lot to reach the spring. A public bus running between Sarandë and Gjirokastër can drop passengers at the Muzinë intersection, followed by a walk to the entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Blue Eye is a karst spring, formed by the pressure of underground water forcing its way through a limestone cave system. It is the primary source of the Bistricë river, which flows into the Ionian Sea. During the socialist period in Albania, the area was a restricted zone reserved for government officials and elite guests, only opening to the general public in the 1990s.
Key Highlights & Activities
A small wooden viewing platform is positioned directly over the spring, allowing visitors to look down into the "pupil" of the eye. Hiking along the shaded river trails is a primary activity. While swimming is technically discouraged due to the constant 10°C water temperature and protected status, many visitors utilize the river further downstream for cold-water immersion.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The entrance area includes a ticket office and basic restroom facilities. Several small cafes and a restaurant are located near the spring, offering outdoor seating under the plane trees. There is no 5G signal, but 4G coverage is generally available. Most of the path from the parking lot is exposed to the sun, though the immediate area around the spring is heavily shaded.
Best Time to Visit
The spring is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00. To avoid high crowd density, arrival before 09:00 or after 17:00 is recommended, especially during the peak summer months of July and August. For photography, midday provides the best overhead sunlight to illuminate the depth and color of the water.
Facts & Legends
Divers have attempted to reach the bottom of the spring, but the extreme upward pressure of the water has prevented anyone from descending past 50 meters; the actual depth remains unknown. Local lore often cites the spring as a place of mystery, while a verified oddity is the consistent water temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, which does not fluctuate regardless of the season.
