Lekursi Castle, Sarande, Albania, Europe
Lëkurësi Castle is a fortress situated on a strategic hilltop overlooking the city of Sarandë in southwestern Albania. It is positioned approximately 3 km from the city center, providing a vantage point over the Ionian Sea, the Ksamil Islands, and the island of Corfu.
Visual Characteristics
The fortress is constructed from rough-hewn local limestone and features a square layout with two dominant round towers positioned at opposite corners. The walls are thick with visible crenellations and arrow slits. The central courtyard is occupied by a stone-built restaurant complex that mirrors the original defensive architecture. The ground consists of a mix of paved stone sections and natural rocky terrain.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via a steep, winding paved road known as Rruga Lëkurësi, branching off the main SH81 highway. The drive from Sarandë city center takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. There is a large, unpaved parking area directly at the castle entrance. While no direct public bus line serves the summit, taxis are a standard transport method, and the climb is a 45-minute trek for pedestrians.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The castle was built in 1537 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent during his campaign against Corfu. Its primary purpose was to control the harbor of Sarandë and the road link to Butrint. Geologically, the site sits on a limestone karst hill typical of the Ceraunian Mountains' southern extension, characterized by sparse Mediterranean scrub and low-lying vegetation.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can walk the perimeter of the restored walls and access the round towers for 360-degree observation. The site is a primary location for observing the sunset over the Ionian Sea. The interior courtyard functions as an open-air restaurant and event space. Historical exploration is limited to the exterior masonry and basic structural layout as the interior has been modernized for hospitality.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site contains a full-service restaurant and bar. Restrooms are located within the restaurant facility. There is very little natural shade available on the ramparts. 5G and 4G cellular signals are exceptionally strong due to the elevation and proximity to city telecommunications towers. Gift vendors occasionally set up near the parking area.
Best Time to Visit
The optimal time for visitation is one hour before sunset for photography. The castle is open daily, typically from 08:00 to 23:00. Summer months (July and August) see high crowd density in the evenings. Early morning visits (08:00–10:00) offer lower temperatures and clearer visibility of the distant Greek islands.
Facts & Legends
Local lore suggests that the castle was once connected to the coastline via a secret underground tunnel used for logistics during Ottoman sieges, though no archaeological evidence has confirmed this. A verified fact is that the castle was strategically positioned to prevent the Venetians from landing troops and to protect the vital grain trade routes of the region.
