Pulebardha Beach, Sarande, Albania, Europe
Pulëbardha Beach is a secluded coastal cove situated between Sarandë and Ksamil in southwestern Albania. It is positioned at the base of a steep limestone ridge along the Ionian Sea, approximately 10 km south of the Sarandë city center.
Visual Characteristics
The beach is composed of medium-sized white pebbles and is bordered by high, vertical limestone cliffs. The water is characterized by a deep emerald and turquoise gradient with high clarity. A rocky outcrop extends into the sea on the southern end, and the seabed drops off sharply into deep water. The surrounding slopes are covered in sparse Mediterranean scrub and low-lying vegetation.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via the SH81 road connecting Sarandë and Ksamil. A steep, unpaved gravel road descends from the main highway; while navigable by standard cars, caution is required due to the incline and narrow turns. Public buses traveling between Sarandë and Ksamil stop at the top of the access road, requiring a 15-minute walk to the shore. A small, terraced parking area is located on the cliffside above the beach.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The name "Pulëbardha" translates to "Seagull," referencing the large number of birds that frequent the rocky cliffs. Geologically, the site is a product of coastal erosion of the karst limestone formations. It remains less urbanized than the central Sarandë beaches, retaining its natural cliff-side profile and ecological status as a typical Ionian coastal habitat.
Key Highlights & Activities
Snorkeling is a primary activity around the rocky perimeter and the southern outcrop where marine life is concentrated. The beach is a popular spot for sunbathing on the provided loungers or the flat rock surfaces. Small boat excursions from Sarandë occasionally anchor in the bay for swimming. A wooden staircase provides access from the clifftop restaurant down to the pebble shore.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site features a prominent wooden seafood restaurant located on the cliff overlooking the beach. Restrooms and outdoor showers are available for patrons and beachgoers during the summer season. 4G and 5G cellular signals are generally available but can be intermittent near the cliff base. There is no natural shade; umbrella rentals are the primary source of cover.
Best Time to Visit
The beach is most active from June through September. For photography, the morning (08:00–10:00) offers the best lighting to capture the water's transparency before the sun moves behind the cliffs. Arrival before 10:00 is recommended during peak summer months to secure parking and a sunbed, as the cove has limited capacity.
Facts & Legends
A local logistical tip is that Pulëbardha is often less affected by the southern winds compared to the beaches in Ksamil, making the water surface calmer. It is widely considered one of the "wilder" beaches in the region due to the lack of large-scale hotel developments directly on the shoreline.
