Santa Quaranta Beach, Sarande, Albania, Europe
Santa Quaranta Beach is a developed coastal segment located in the southern bay area of Sarandë, Albania. It is situated along the urban coastline between the city center and the Rruga Jonianet residential district.
Visual Characteristics
The beach is composed of small, white polished pebbles and artificial concrete sunbathing platforms. The water is deep turquoise with high clarity and a rocky seabed. The area is flanked by multi-story hotel structures and stone retaining walls, with the landscape featuring palm trees and Mediterranean ornamental plants integrated into the resort infrastructure.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located 2 km southeast of the Port of Sarandë on Rruga Butrinti. It is accessible by vehicle via the SH81 coastal road or by foot from the city center in approximately 20 minutes. There is limited street parking on Rruga Butrinti; most parking is reserved for hotel guests. Public buses traveling from Sarandë to Ksamil stop at the nearby "Santa Quaranta" station.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The beach is named after the nearby Monastery of Forty Saints (Santa Quaranta). Originally a rocky and inaccessible part of the coastline, it was transformed through urban development and coastal engineering to create a functional leisure zone. The marine environment is characterized by the presence of Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows further offshore.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming and sunbathing are the primary activities, supported by extensive sunbed and umbrella rentals. The site features a large outdoor swimming pool belonging to the adjacent resort that is often open to the public for a fee. Water sports, including jet-skiing and paddleboarding, are available through private operators on the southern end of the beach.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The beach is highly serviced, featuring multiple restrooms, outdoor showers, and changing cabins. There is a beach bar and restaurant on-site providing full food and beverage services. 5G cellular coverage is excellent. Most of the beach area is shaded by umbrellas, as natural shade from the palm trees is minimal during peak sun hours.
Best Time to Visit
Peak visitation occurs between July and August, from 10:00 to 17:00. For quieter conditions and softer lighting for photography, early morning (08:00–09:00) is optimal. The beach faces west, making it a prominent location for viewing the sunset over the Ionian Sea and the northern tip of Corfu.
Facts & Legends
The beach is part of a series of coastal developments that saw the installation of large stone breakwaters to protect against the winter swells of the Ionian Sea. A local tip is that the water here is often slightly cooler than in the northern part of the bay due to deep-water currents moving closer to the shore.
