Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park, Hutchinson, USA Kansas, North America
Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park is a geological preserve located in Logan County, Kansas. It features a series of eroded chalk formations.
Visual Characteristics
The park contains exposed Niobrara Chalk formations, characterized by steep gullies and hoodoos. The chalk is primarily white to light gray. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of prairie grasses and scattered shrubs adapted to arid conditions. The formations reach heights of up to 60 feet.
Location & Access Logistics
The park is situated approximately 10 miles west of Scott City, Kansas, off U.S. Highway 96. Access is via a gravel road, County Road 170, for approximately 3 miles. Parking is available at designated lots near the park entrance. No public transport services the park.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The formations are the result of millions of years of erosion acting upon the Niobrara Chalk, a geological formation deposited during the Late Cretaceous period. This chalk layer is rich in marine fossils. The area was historically used for ranching before its designation as a state park.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is permitted on designated trails, including the Overlook Trail and the Fossil Trail. Observation of geological formations and fossil hunting (where permitted and with appropriate permits) are primary activities. Photography of the landscape is also a common pursuit.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the park entrance. Limited shade is provided by natural rock overhangs. Cell phone signal is unreliable within the park. No food vendors are located within the park; visitors should bring their own supplies.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is during the early morning or late afternoon when the low sun angle creates shadows that accentuate the formations. Spring (April-May) and Fall (September-October) offer the most moderate temperatures. Summer months can be extremely hot.
Facts & Legends
The name "Little Jerusalem" is attributed to early settlers who were reminded of the biblical city's appearance due to the layered, eroded structures. Fossilized fish and marine reptiles from the Cretaceous period are frequently discovered in the chalk deposits.
