From the park's main entrance (El Zaino), visitors must take a shuttle bus to the Cañaveral sector. From Cañaveral, a 1.5-kilometer walking trail leads to Playa Cristal. Parking is available at the El Zaino entrance. Public transport to the El Zaino entrance is available via local buses from Santa Marta's central bus terminal, marked as "Santa Marta - Palomino" or "Santa Marta - Riohacha."

Playa Cristal is part of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range's coastal ecosystem. The area is classified as a tropical dry forest and marine ecosystem. The geological formation consists of sedimentary rocks and alluvial deposits.
